“Not just art,but my works are Sculpture Utilitaires ”
that was the reply of Pierre Cardin to those who speak of his design furniture as works of art. And that is the difference in all the ¨maestro¨ works: they are not only artistic expressions so beautiful to look at and discover, but also important for their usefulness.
All sculptures created by Studio Pierre Cardin in the1970s up to today, are genuine furniture to use. So, in these pages, you will discover many furniture or accessories which could find utilities in your home, revealing in the same time their sinuous forms and beauty.
The genius of Pierre Cardin has fun to consider as clothes and dress the furniture sculpture:
“it’s stupid to put a interior furniture against a wall, if my furniture is recto-verso, has to be seen from all angles. From behind to opposite ”.
This is the concept which is present in the whole creative Pierre Cardin line and make it unique and inimitable even in our days and future.
“Art is a passion I’ve had all my life. ”
Furniture and Design
Pierre Cardin, the inventor of “prêt-à-porter” whose graphically iconic initials personify his signature style, is best known for fashion and accessory design. However, he launched a unique furniture line during the 1970s that transposed his sculptural approach to fashion into furniture design: futuristic forms combined with traditional lacquer and cabinetmaking techniques and revolutionary space-age designs featured metal and plastics.
Artistic director and catalyst, he challenged artists such as Serge Manzon, Christian Adam, Maria Pergay, Giacomo Passera, Prevost, and Pacos to renew contemporary French furniture design. Archival documents and newl commissioned photography include rare designs produced in his Paris workshops or by Japanese firm Yamada Shomei, such as his Space line that is the avant-garde symbol of this emperor of 1970s style. Cardin actively participated in this timely publication aimed at the burgeoning market for 1970s design.
